Training glossaryHypertrophy mechanisms

Hypertrophy

Hypertrophy is the increase in muscle size in response to strength training and adequate recovery.

Also known as: Muscle growth

It depends on sufficient stimulus (volume and intensity), progression over time and recovery — not on a single exercise or trick.

Weekly volume per muscle group (a common reference is 10 to 20 sets) tends to be the main lever for hypertrophy.
