Metabolic stress

Metabolic stress is the buildup of metabolites (like lactate) during sets with short rest and high reps, felt as the 'burn' and the 'pump'.

Also known as: The pump

This buildup, typical of moderate loads, higher repetitions and short rests, may contribute to growth through pathways like fiber recruitment and cell swelling (the 'pump'). It is what many people feel as burning at the end of a set.

It is the third classic mechanism of hypertrophy, alongside mechanical tension and muscle damage. It works as a complement — for example in isolation exercises and techniques like drop sets — but it does not replace load and progression. SelfShapeAI balances these stimuli by varying rep ranges and techniques within a plan coherent with your goal.
