Training glossaryPeriodization & recovery

Deload

A deload is a planned period of reduced volume or intensity that allows recovery before you keep progressing.

Also known as: Deload week

Unlike stopping training, a deload keeps the routine with lower loads and/or volume for a few days or a week, reducing accumulated fatigue without losing the habit.

It is most useful in long, intense training blocks; people training with moderate, well-distributed volume do not always need frequent deloads.
