Training glossaryIntensity techniques

Drop set

A drop set means reducing the load and continuing the set without rest once you get close to failure, extending the stimulus.

Also known as: Descending set

In practice, you train close to failure with one weight, reduce the load (usually 10% to 30%) and continue immediately for more repetitions.

It is a useful intensity technique occasionally, but it generates a lot of fatigue — using it on every set of every workout tends to compromise recovery and weekly volume.
