Time under tension

Time under tension is the total time a muscle stays loaded during a set.

Also known as: TUT

Controlling the eccentric (lowering) phase is one way to increase time under tension without necessarily adding load.

It is a useful variable, but a secondary one: volume, intensity and progression remain the main drivers of hypertrophy.
