Training glossaryFundamentals & measures

Training volume

Training volume is the amount of work performed, usually measured in sets per muscle group per week.

Also known as: Weekly volume

For hypertrophy, what matters most is weekly volume per muscle, not the sets of a single isolated workout.

Good volume is the amount you can sustain with quality and progression: too much without recovery becomes fatigue, and too little may lack stimulus.
